Customers ask - 48grams answers

Kundinnen fragen – 48grams antwortet

Dear readers, we have been publishing articles in this skincare blog for a year now. Almost 40,000 words on all topics that have relevance in facial care. Often we have written about the skin protection barrier, about dry skin, too oily skin and skin that is really sick; about health maintenance or rescue measures. Of course, we've featured and reviewed the most exciting ingredients in 48grams products (yes, we love healing mastic oil and anti-aging miracle ingredient OPC). Our goal: We want to inform in an entertaining way and warn without a cautionary finger. At the end we try to anticipate the questions of the buyers or readers. Nevertheless, we naturally receive inquiries again and again - by mail, on the phone or from our own environment. Therefore, we have decided - in loose succession - to publish reader requests and our answers to them. Please note the following: We are skincare enthusiasts, we know a lot from research and current reporting. But we are not dermatologists. Therefore, in case of illnesses, our tips are in no way a substitute for an appointment with your dermatologist.

What is so special about Oligo Hyaluronic Acid?

Simone G. from Dortmund: I keep reading that you use Oligo Hyaluronic Acid for your products. Why is that so special?

Our answer: Oligo Hyaluronic Acid is a special and particularly valuable form of hyaluronic acid. Compared to conventional hyaluronic acid, Oligo has a lower molecular size. This means that the molecules are smaller and penetrate the skin more easily. The main advantage is the ability to moisturize the skin intensively. The small molecules sink into the deeper layers of the skin and bind moisture there. This makes the skin look plumper, smoother and more supple. In addition, Oligo Hyaluronic Acid also has antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from harmful environmental influences and counteract premature aging. However, due to cost, most skincare brands only use long-chain Hyaluronic Acid. At best, this can only moisturize the surface of the tissue.

The daily fight against pimples

Michaele T. from Sigmaringen: I often struggle with pimples. Could you give me tips on how to care for them? Thank you.

Our answer: To answer this question better, you need to understand how pimples develop: Our skin has many glands that secrete an oil called sebum to the surface. This forms a protective layer against external influences. But when the pores get clogged, bacteria collect in the sebum; the result is small inflammations. It becomes visible as a pus elevation. What you absolutely must do is: wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser (never alcohol-based) that is designed for your skin. Use a gentle exfoliant with an dissolving ingredient two or three times a week. Salicylic acid is particularly suitable here. This removes dead skin cells and opens clogged pores. Also use a light, oil-free moisturizer. This will hydrate your skin while reducing the risk of clogging.  If pimples (or even blackheads) don't disappear despite a good skin care routine, consult a dermatologist. A dermatologist can give you personalized advice and prescription products if necessary.

This must not go in the eye

Susanne B. from Dresden: It is recommended not to get too close to the eyelids with eye care products to avoid possible irritation or undesirable side effects. Why is this so?

Our answer: Dear Mrs. B., compared to other areas of the face, the skin around the eyes is particularly sensitive and delicate. It is even thinner and has fewer sebaceous glands than the rest of the tissue. This makes it more susceptible to dryness and irritation. Eye care products contain special ingredients or formulations designed to moisturize, reduce dark circles or reduce puffiness. Although these products are safe, they can cause irritation. Possible symptoms include redness, burning, itching or even allergic reactions. To ensure that they benefit only from the positive aspects, it is recommended to apply the care with a distance of one centimeter from the edge of the eye. If some product does get into the eye, you should rinse it out with plenty of water.

Why biocellulose makes the difference

Frank W. from Cologne: What is the difference between a cloth mask and a face mask made of biocellulose?

Our answer: In short, the difference lies in the materials from which the mask is made. And the properties it offers. A cloth mask is made of cotton, fleece or viscose. It is placed on the face and moved until it covers the contours. Of course, this is also done with masks made of biocellulose. But the comfort effect of this special material is described by customers as better. Biocellulose is fermented coconut water - it has a higher absorption capacity for ingredients and adaptability to the skin. This type of masks have a much increased ability to retain moisture. The result: intense hydration of the skin. At 48grams, we have based our entire mask collection on this principle.

Why "organic" is not synonymous with "allergy-free"

Sieglinde F. from Siegen: I always thought that products that are "organic" do not cause allergies. Why is this wrong?

Our answer: It is an unfortunately common misconception that "organic" or "natural" products automatically do not cause allergies. Although certified organic or natural creams, masks or serums are healthier and more environmentally friendly, this does not necessarily mean that they are compatible for really all people. The risk of an allergic reaction always exists to a small percentage. For this, it is important to know that some people react to certain plant extracts, essential oils or other natural ingredients. The immune system gives an alarm here. Usually this manifests itself in the form of redness, swelling or pimples. To minimize reactions, it is advisable to perform a patch test before using a new product. Apply a small amount of the product to an inconspicuous area on your skin. Carefully observe any changes. If no unwanted symptoms appear, it is also safe to use the product on your face. Another very basic tip: the fewer ingredients mentioned in the so-called INCI list on the back of the product, the better.

Dark spots vs. light skin

Mrs. Z. from Berlin: I notice dark spots on my skin more and more often. Can I even out my complexion and make my skin look more radiant again at the same time?

Our answer: A good option is, for example, a brightening serum or cream with ingredients such as vitamin C, niacinamide or alpha-arbutin. These ingredients can help to reduce dark spots and improve skin tone. When buying, make sure that the new care is also moisturizing. This way you will achieve a double effect: dark spots disappear and the tissue becomes more radiant again. Apply the product regularly to pre-cleansed skin and ideally combine it with a sunscreen. Because: sun exposure will exacerbate dark spots.

When stress becomes visible on the face

Mandy E. from Frankfurt a.M.: I am often stressed and notice that this affects my facial skin. What can I do - besides working less? (little joke)

Our answer: It will certainly be a while before the four-day week is introduced. Seriously, if you can't reduce your daily stress, you should use skincare products with plenty of vitamin C. The antioxidant properties of this vitamin significantly improve the skin condition (but certainly not from one day to the next). The reason: vitamin C promotes collagen production, thus protects the skin from free radical damage. Look for serums or creams that contain vitamin C and are labeled as "brightening," "firming," or "antioxidant." Hyaluronic acid is another ingredient that has moisturizing properties and helps hydrate the skin. The beautiful result: fine lines visibly diminish. If you are looking for such a product at 48grams, we advise our Antioxidant Booster Serum.
